Thyrotropin receptors in thyroid plasma membranes. Characteristics of thyrotropin binding and solubilization of thyrotropin receptor activity by tryptic digestion. Biologically active bovine 125I-thyrotropin preparations have been prepared, characterized, and used to evaluate the optimal conditions for thyrotropin binding to bovine thyroid plasma membranes in vitro. Binding of 125I-TSH has a pH optimum around 6.0 and is sensitive to the choice and concentration of buffer. Binding is inhibited by salts, especially those containing magnesium and calcium ions; magnesium concentrations optimal for adenylate cyclase assays (2 to 5 mM) result in 85 to 98% inhibition of binding. Binding is temperature sensitive. At 37 degrees binding has its highest initial level; however, instability of the membrane at this temperature causes a rapid loss of binding activity. Binding at 0 degrees is optimal in 30 min and at the same level as initial binding at 37 degrees; since there is no decrease in binding activity, it has been chosen as the optimal temperature. Thyrotropin, luteinizing hormone, the beta subunit of thyrotropin, and the alpha subunit of thyrotropin

Yankees Sign Dwight Gooden NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees are giving Dwight Gooden yet another chance. The 35-year-old right-hander, 10 victories shy of 200 in the major leagues, has signed a minor league contract with the Yankees. ``We still feel like he has something left in his arm,'' Yankees pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said Sunday. Stottlemyre coached Gooden with the Mets and the Yankees. Gooden, released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays two weeks ago, told The Sunday Record of Hackensack that he was ``totally blown away'' at the opportunity to pitch for the Yankees again. ``George Steinbrenner is giving me a chance, and I'm going to make the most of it,'' he told the paper. Steinbrenner gave Gooden a chance before. The right-hander joined the Yankees in 1996 after missing the 1995 season because of a drug suspension. ``They love him here,'' Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said. ``there are certain guys that New Yorkers always love. Doc is one of those guys. It seems like wherever he is he is always popular here

Mitral annular calcification is not associated with decreased procedural success, durability of repair, or left ventricular remodelling in percutaneous edge-to-edge repair of mitral regurgitation. Mitral annular calcification (MAC) negatively influences outcomes in surgical mitral valve (MV) repair for mitral regurgitation (MR). However, there are no data on whether MAC impacts on outcomes of MitraClip percutaneous MV edge-to-edge repair. This study sought to investigate whether the presence of MAC impacts on the procedural success and durability of percutaneous transcatheter repair of MR using the MitraClip. One hundred and seventy-three patients undergoing MitraClip repair for significant MR were studied. Patients with moderate-or-severe MAC (n=28) were compared to those with no-or-mild MAC. Post-procedural MR severity was not different (p=0.642) and MR reduction to moderate-or-less was equally high in patients with moderate-or-severe MAC (100%) and those without (96.7%), p=1.000. At one year, MR severity was not different (p=0.831), and there was no difference in the repair durability when comparing patients with moderate

Abstract Whereas oncogenic retroviruses are common in animals, human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) is the only transmissible retrovirus associated with cancer in humans and is etiologically linked to adult T-cell leukemia. The leukemogenesis process is still largely unknown, but relies on extended survival and clonal expansion of infected cells, which in turn accumulate genetic defects. A common feature of human tumor viruses is their ability to stimulate proliferation and survival of infected pretumoral cells and then hide by establishing latency in cells that have acquired a transformed phenotype. Whereas disruption of the DNA repair is one of the major processes responsible for the accumulation of genomic abnormalities and carcinogenesis, the absence of DNA repair also poses the threat of cell-cycle arrest or apoptosis of virus-infected cells. This study describes how the HTLV-1 p30 viral protein inhibits conservative homologous recombination (HR) DNA repair by targeting the MRE11/RAD50/NBS1 complex and favors the error-prone nonhomologous-endjoining (NHEJ) DNA-repair pathway instead. As a result, HTLV-1 p30 may facilitate the accumulation of mutations in the host genome and the cumulative risk of transformation. Our results provide

X-ray film and nuclear emulsion-coated coverslips were exposed to sections of coronary artery previously incubated with [125I]iodocyanopindolol (50 pM) in the absence and presence of ICI 118,551 (70 nM) to block beta-2 adrenoceptors, CGP 20712A (100 nM) to block beta-1 adrenoceptors or (-)-propranolol (1 microM) to define nonspecific binding. The medial smooth muscle of the coronary artery had an even distribution of beta-1 adrenoceptors and two populations of beta-2 adrenoceptors, one evenly distributed and the other highly localized. Beta-2 adrenoceptors were also located on nerve tissue and in the adventitia. There was no evidence for localization of beta adrenoceptors on endothelial cells. [Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion associated with meningeal infiltration of tumor cells and elevated interleukin-1 beta and interleukin-6 in cerebrospinal fluid of a patient with adult T-cell leukemia]. A 73-year-old man with acute adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) in remission was re-admitted to our hospital due to drowsiness, headache, and bilateral knee joint pain on May 17, 1998. On admission, examinations revealed decreased serum sodium concentration (112 mEq/l), low plasma osmotic pressure (259 mOsm/l), and elevated antidiuretic hormone(5.6 pg/ml). Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed an increased number of abnormal flower-like lymphocyte (951/microliter). Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging found no abnormality in the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. These findings yielded a diagnosis of syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). Though ATL patients typically exhibit a variety of clinical symptoms, SIADH is rarely one of the complications. Further investigation showed that IL-1 beta and IL-6 concentrations were increased in spinal fluid but not in serum. Recently, it has been reported that exogeneous

Automatic segmentation and plaque characterization in atherosclerotic carotid artery MR images. In vivo MRI provides a means to non-invasively image and assess the morphological features of atherosclerotic carotid arteries. To assess quantitatively the degree of vulnerability and the type of plaque, the contours of the lumen, outer boundary of the vessel wall and plaque components, need to be traced. Currently this is done manually, which is time-consuming and sensitive to inter- and intra-observer variability. The goal of this work was to develop an automated contour detection technique for tracing the lumen, outer boundary and plaque contours in carotid MR short-axis black-blood images. Seventeen patients with carotid atherosclerosis were imaged using high-resolution in vivo MRI, generating a total of 50 PD- and T1-weighted MR images. These images were automatically segmented using the algorithm presented in this work, which combines model-based segmentation and fuzzy clustering to detect the vessel wall, lumen and lipid core boundaries. The results demonstrate excellent correspondence between automatic and manual area measurements for lumen (r = 0.92) and outer (r = 0.91), and acceptable correspondence for fibrous cap thickness (r = 0.71). Though further optimization is required, our

Cl- -HCO3- exchange in developing neonatal rat cardiac cells. Biochemical identification and immunolocalization of band 3-like proteins. The Cl- -HCO3- exchanger is the main anionic exchanger (AE) that alleviates alkaline loads in cardiac cells. We recently identified in adult ventricular cells two membrane proteins (80 and 120 kD) immunologically related to the erythroid band 3 and likely to mediate the anion exchange. In the present study, we further investigated the Cl- -HCO3- exchanger activity concomitantly with the expression and intracellular localization of the band 3-like proteins during the development of neonatal rat cardiac cells maintained in culture for 17 days. Microspectrofluorometric measurements of pHi in single cells show that neonatal rat cardiomyocytes display a fully functional DIDS-sensitive Cl- -HCO3- exchanger at early stages of development. Neither basal pHi nor the anion exchange activity changes with different stages of the culture. In Western blotting with an anti-whole erythroid band 3 antibody, we found both the 80- and the 120-kD band 3-like proteins in whole heart and cultured neonatal cardiac cells. The 80-kD

The intrinsic luminescence of individual plasmonic nanostructures in aqueous suspension by photon time-of-flight spectroscopy. We have studied the intrinsic one-photon excited luminescence of freely diffusing gold nanoparticles of different shapes in aqueous suspension. Gold nanospheres were used as a reference, since their luminescence has been investigated previously and their light absorption and scattering properties are described analytically by Mie theory. We then studied gold nanobipyramids and nanostars that have recently gained interest as building blocks for new plasmonic nanosensors. The aim of our study is to determine whether the luminescence of gold nanoparticles of complex shape (bipyramids and nanostars) is a plasmon-assisted process, in line with the conclusions of recent spectroscopic studies on spheres and nanorods. Our study has been performed on particles in suspension in order to avoid any artefact from the heterogeneous environment created when particles are deposited on a substrate. We employ a recently developed photon time-of-flight method in combination with correlation spectroscopy of the light scattered by the particles to probe the luminescent properties of individual particles based on a particle-by-particle spectral analysis. Furthermore, we have performed resonant light scattering spectroscopic measurements on the same samples. Our work demonstrates the power of our time-

In the general population, low body weight and body mass index (BMI) are significant risk factors for any fracture, but the specific association between body weight, BMI, and prevalence of vertebral fractures in osteoporotic women is not fully recognized. Hence, the association between body weight, BMI, and prevalent vertebral fractures was investigated in 362 women with never-treated postmenopausal osteoporosis. Differences in intracellular calcium signaling after activation of the thrombin receptor by thrombin and agonist peptide in osteoblast-like cells. Thrombin and the thrombin receptor agonist peptide (TRAP) caused a rise in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) in the human osteoblast-like cell line Saos-2. Striking differences in the [Ca2+]i signals elicited by these agonists were revealed. In cell populations, thrombin induced a transient increase in [Ca2+]i while TRAP caused a biphasic [Ca2+]i response consisting of an initial peak and a sustained plateau phase. In individual cells, thrombin mainly caused a single [Ca2+]i transient while TRAP induced repetitive [Ca2+]i spikes. Neither tyrosine phosphorylation, cAMP-dependent phosphorylation, nor pertussis toxin-sensitive G proteins appeared to be involved in thrombin receptor [Ca2+]i signaling in this cell line. Have a Little Fun! Risky Drug 'Dabbing' Growing in Popularity Risky Drug 'Dabbing' Growing in Popularity (HealthDay News) A potentially hazardous form of marijuana use called "dabbing" is growing in popularity across the United States, researchers warn. The study findings were released online June 15 in Pediatrics. In dabbing, users inhale through a water pipe the vapor from "dabs" of waxy or solid marijuana concentrate. A piece of superheated metal or glass instantly vaporizes the dab, creating an intense high from a single inhalation. But the dabs are created using highly volatile butane gas, and a number of fires, explosions, and severe burns have been linked to the production of this marijuana concentrate, lead author John Stogner, PhD, an assistant professor of criminology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, told HealthDay. "Given the amount of butane that can build up during this process, these individuals should be worried about any spark from any source," he said. Experts also are concerned about the high potency of the dabs. The crystallized resins created by the process can have a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration approaching 80%, the study authors said.

Having recently reviewed the viola music including the Sonata, Legend, Concert-Piece and the Trio for violin, viola and piano (see review) we now turn to the first volume of the violin sonatas. Both Jackson, who recorded the Trio, and Wass, whos recorded the sonatas, are by now Bax regulars. Potton Hall is an established recording base for Naxos and one familiar to both men. Various pairings have tackled the First Sonata. In recent years Gruenberg and McCabe have recorded it on Chandos and the Robert Gibbs-Mary Mei-Loc Wu partnership have done so similarly for ASV. Back in 1965 Henry Holst and Frank Merrick recorded it, as they did the second and third. Its been recently released on Concert Artist where the First is coupled with Deliuss Second Sonata (see review). The Third Sonata has had a much less productive time. Holst and Merrick recorded it but after them no one until Gibbs and Mary Mei-Loc Wu did so. Historically minded collectors will know that a fragmentary 1936

Gracias!: var slang = [{ slang: "¿Qué más?", meaning: 'its actually just a local way to sayWhats up?”' }, { slang:Listo!", meaning: 'Ready, done, ok' }, { slang:Deli!", meaning: 'Yummy or delicious' }, { slang: "Rumbear", meaning: 'To party' }, { slang: "Inmamable", meaning:

Q: Question about nonlinear regression Speed: 25 35 45 55 65 Mileage: 20 24 26 24 20 The lease-squares line for predicting mileage from speed is mileage= 22.8 +(0*speed) Question: The correlation between mileage and speed is r=0. What does this say about the usefulness of the regression line in predicting mileage? I just make a scatterplot of the data and draw this line on the plot and noticed that it shows a strong non-linear relationship. However, I don't know how to answer this question. Is there anybody could help? Thanks! A: You are totally correct and a linear regression leads to this "stupid" result. But, I suppose that you observed that a scatterplot of the data reveals something looking like a parabola and effectively a quadratic regression $$M=a+b S+ c S^2$$ gives something which is much better. Brute force would lead to $$M=-0.0142857 S^2+1.28571 S-3.27143$$
